Before we get to the recipes let's first talk a little bit about the health benefits of drinking homemade apple juice recipes and also some advice about juicing apples!
Some Benefits of Juicing Apples
Now that super-foods are something of a buzz word, it can be easy to overlook the humble apple. While fruits such as blueberries and acai, and veggies like spinach and kale get a lot of attention, the apple is still an awesome source of nutrition.
Apples are a good source of antioxidant vitamins A and C, and are also a decent source of vitamin K. A good source of minerals, magnesium, calcium, zinc and potassium are all found in this fruit.
Antioxidant phytochemicals called quercetins, catechins (also the key ingredient that makes green tea so healthy) and chlorogenic acid abound in apples, especially in and under the peel.
Tips for Juicing Apples
Buying organic is always plan A. Pesticides are used heavily in non-organic apples and have counter-productive health benefits to the amazing nutrition that the apples are providing.
If the apples you are using are organic, then definitely juice them with their skins on! The skins are such an awesome source of antioxidant phytochemicals, that juicing the whole apple will dramatically increase the health benefits of the juice!
If you are not using organic, then it is better to peel the apple first. Since pesticides are sprayed onto the fruit, then the peel is where most of the pesticides reside.
The core can be juiced no problem too. The core is also a more dense source of antioxidants, so it's actually a good idea to put the middle of that apple down the chute of your juicer along with the rest of it!
Some people may prefer the taste of a juice apple without the peel and / or core. There is no right or wrong, just remember that there are greater health benefits to juicing the whole fruit.
