What could be a more classic juice than orange juice or grapefruit juice, they have been staples for half a century or more. Steer clear of the store-bought stuff however, it's nothing but a shadow of real fresh made citrus juice.
Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas, tangelos, pomelos, and many other exotic citrus we have never heard of - the list goes on. Ranging from super sweet to wince-inducing sourness, citrus has that special taste exclusive to it's sub-group as a fruit. Refreshing and cooling, citrus tends to invoke that feeling of relaxed hot summer days. Ok, enough poetry, on with the show 🙂
One of the awesome things bout drinking citrus juice recipes is the powerful benefits for health and well-being they contain. One of the core chemical ingredients in citrus that bring such health benefits are flavonoids, a potent group of antioxidants that abound in citrus. Research shows that flavonoids protect cells from free-radical damage (something that helps reduce our incidence of cancer), helps protect blood vessels from leakage and rupture, increases the potency of vitamin C, and has potent anti-inflammatory effects. The combination of flavonoids and vitamin C is extremely powerful in disease prevention, and nature packs these 2 nutrients up together for us in citrus.
Some fruits you can juice with their skins on and still get a nice tasting juice, however citrus fruits are not one of these! Juicing citrus with its skin on will produce a juice so sour it is practically undrinkable. This is something of a bummer since there are a lot of flavonoids (and fiber) in the peels. The good news is that the white pithy stuff at the center of and surrounding citrus is also loaded with flavonoids and is not anywhere near as sour as the peel. Thus, I highly recommend getting as much pith into your juicer along with the fruit.
Drink one of these a day and you will have a tough time catching a cold.
This is lemonade at its finest
The little guys just wanna be one
This recipe does not have to be strict, you can use any small oranges, or just use 1 type. You will need about 6 or 7 total for 1 serving.
Yep - lime time
Lime juice is intense so decrease the amount of lime juice or up the amount of water to your preference.
